Benefits of walking you might not have considered
Are you having a hard time figuring out which exercise is best for you? While you narrow it down, try this: Just walk. It’s easy, it’s free, and it’s fun.
When I walk, it's just me and the road. And the deer. I’ve even seen a couple of bears while walking, which was a bit nerve-wracking, although fortunately, they didn’t pay attention to me. Oh, yeah, I'm supposed to be talking you into walking.
I'm sure walking in the city or the suburbs can be enjoyable. But since I live in the country, for me walking is awesome. I don’t even bring my iPod. There are too many other great things to experience. Birds singing, of course. Cows mooing. Feeling the breeze. I talk to the neighbor’s horses when I go by. I even pass a llama farm on my route, and they’re so cute when they come running up to the fence to see who's passing by. The fresh air smells wonderful (the cows, not so much).
I usually carry my digital camera in case I need it. I didn’t have it when I saw the bears, unfortunately. Here are a couple shots I’ve taken along my route.

Before the Storm

Usually I go from 1 to 4 miles, depending on how I’m feeling and how much time I have. It’s such a great opportunity to clear my head, plan the rest of my day or week, or figure out how to deal with a problem. I have some pretty good conversations with myself out there on the road.
However, I’m not one of those diehards you see out there rain or shine. If it’s nasty, I’m staying in. At least I have indoor options like my elliptical and some workout tapes and DVDs.
